HALS selection guide: monomeric, polymeric and NOR HALS
Choose a hindered amine light stabilizer by part thickness, end use and what else is in the formulation. Low-molecular-weight (monomeric) HALS move quickly to the surface of thick parts; high-molecular-weight polymeric HALS resist migration and extraction in thin films and fibers; NOR HALS have low basicity for acidic coatings. Dosages are from each product page.
| Application | HALS grade | Type | Reference dosage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thick-section injection-moulded PP, ABS and PS (surface protection) | HALS 770, SABOSTAB® UV 70, UV 91 | Low-MW (monomeric) HALS | 0.1–1.0% |
| PE and PP film, tapes and fibers (low migration and volatility) | HALS 944, HALS 622, SABOSTAB® UV 62, UV 94 | Polymeric / oligomeric high-MW HALS | 0.05–1.0% (944), 0.1–1.2% (622) |
| LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE film and tapes, cost-performance | HALS 783 | Blend of HALS 944 + 622 | 0.05–1.5% |
| PP thick sections needing long-term and surface protection | HALS 791 | Blend of HALS 944 + 770 | 0.1–0.8% |
| Agricultural film, talc-filled PP and TPO (pigments, fillers, agrochemicals) | HALS 119, SABOSTAB® UV 119 | High-MW, low-interaction HALS | 0.05–1.0% |
| Very fine denier PP and PA fibers | SABOSTAB® UV 40 | Amino HALS with good melt flow in spinning | See TDS |
| Coatings: solvent-borne, water-borne, 2K PUR, UV-curable | LS-123, SABOSTAB® UV 65, UV 26 | Liquid NOR (aminoether) or low-alkalinity ester HALS | 0.5–2.0% (LS-123) |
| Polyolefin surfaces: yellowing, chalking, gloss loss | LS 3853 | Fatty-acid-ester HALS | 0.1–1.0% |
Antioxidant selection guide
Most polymers need a primary hindered phenolic antioxidant for long-term heat stability and a secondary phosphite as a processing stabilizer during extrusion and moulding. Thioesters add long-term thermal ageing resistance in polyolefins.
| Goal | Antioxidant grade | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term heat stability, general purpose | RIANOX® 1010, 1076 | Primary hindered phenolic |
| Processing stability during extrusion and moulding | RIANOX® 168, 626 | Secondary phosphite (processing stabilizer) |
| Long-term thermal ageing of polyolefins | RIANOX® DSTP, DLTP | Thioester synergist |
| Polyamides and water-extraction resistance | RIANOX® 330, 245 | Hindered phenolic |
| Low volatility in PE, PP and engineering plastics | RIANOX® 3114, 1790 | High-MW phenolic |
| Polyols, polyurethanes, SBS/SIS and other elastomers | RIANOX® 1135, 1520 | Liquid phenolic |
Antioxidant and HALS FAQ
What is the difference between antioxidants and HALS?
Antioxidants protect a polymer from heat and oxygen, both during processing and over its service life. HALS (hindered amine light stabilizers) protect it from UV light outdoors by trapping the free radicals that sunlight creates. Parts used outdoors usually need both: an antioxidant stabilizer package for processing and heat, plus a HALS for weathering.
What are processing stabilizers?
Processing stabilizers are secondary antioxidants, mostly phosphites such as RIANOX® 168 and 626, that decompose hydroperoxides at high melt temperatures. They keep melt flow and colour stable during extrusion and moulding and are normally combined with a primary phenolic antioxidant such as RIANOX® 1010 or 1076.
What is the difference between monomeric and polymeric HALS?
Monomeric, low-molecular-weight HALS such as HALS 770 diffuse quickly to the surface, so they protect thick injection-moulded parts well but can migrate out of thin products. Polymeric or high-molecular-weight HALS such as HALS 944, HALS 622 and SABOSTAB® UV 62 have very low volatility and migration, so they are preferred for films, tapes and fibers. Blends such as HALS 791 (944 + 770) combine both effects.
What is NOR HALS?
NOR HALS, also called aminoether HALS, carry an N–OR group instead of N–H or N–CH₃. The lower basicity means they do not react with acidic ingredients such as catalysts, pigments and biocides. Our liquid NOR HALS LS-123 is used in solvent-borne and water-borne coatings, including 2K PUR and UV-curable clear coats for automotive and industrial finishes, at 0.5–2.0%.
Which HALS is best for synthetic fibers?
For PP and PA fibers, use a high-molecular-weight HALS that does not migrate or volatilize during spinning, such as HALS 944 or SABOSTAB® UV 62. For very fine denier fibers, where conventional HALS can disturb melt flow or build up on filters, SABOSTAB® UV 40 is the product of choice.
Can HALS be used together with antioxidants?
Yes. HALS work well with phenolic and phosphite antioxidants, and outdoor polyolefin parts typically use all three. Avoid high levels of thioester synergists such as DSTP or DLTP together with HALS, because sulfur compounds can reduce HALS efficiency. Our HALS UV stabilizers guide covers selection in more detail.
How do I choose an antioxidant or HALS supplier?
Look for a supplier that can cover primary, secondary and light stabilizers, document each lot with a TDS and COA, and help you set dosages. As an antioxidant and HALS supplier, SYCHEM TECH supplies RIANOX®, SABOSTAB® and Unitechem grades and will suggest a stabilizer package for your resin and service life.
