Compatibilizer FAQ

What is a compatibilizer in polymers?

A compatibilizer is a polymer additive that makes two materials that do not mix, such as PP and glass fiber or PP and nylon, bond at their interface. One part of the compatibilizer molecule is like the matrix resin; the other part, usually grafted maleic anhydride (MAH), is polar and bonds to the filler, fiber or second polymer. Better adhesion turns into higher tensile and impact strength and a finer, more stable blend morphology. Our guide what is a compatibilizer explains the main types.

How do MAH-grafted compatibilizers work?

The polyolefin or ABS backbone of the compatibilizer mixes into the matrix, while the anhydride groups react with amine end groups of polyamide, or form hydrogen bonds and chemical bonds with the silanol and hydroxyl groups on glass fiber, minerals and wood flour. The compatibilizer sits at the interface and transfers load from the matrix to the reinforcement. That is why graft level (MAH content) and melt flow matter as much as the base resin.

Which compatibilizers are used for PP?

For glass-fiber and mineral-filled PP and for PP/PA alloys, MAH-grafted homopolymer PP such as SY-HA is the standard choice at 3–5%. For automotive interiors with odour limits, use a low-odour grade such as SY-LV. See compatibilizers for PP for dosage by glass-fiber level and troubleshooting.

How much compatibilizer should I add?

Typical loadings are 2–10% of the compound. Our reference dosages are 3–5% for SY-HA, SY-LV, SY-AC and SY-AD, 5–10% for SY-AE, 2–10% for SY-PW and 3–10% for SY-PX and SY-PZ. Run a control and three dosage levels, then choose the lowest level where tensile and impact strength stop improving, since excess compatibilizer can lower stiffness and heat resistance.

What is the difference between a compatibilizer and a coupling agent?

A coupling agent, such as a silane, is a small molecule applied to the surface of glass fiber or a mineral. A compatibilizer is a polymer added to the melt that bonds to both the matrix and the filler or second polymer. In glass-fiber PP both are used together: the silane sizing on the fiber and a PP-g-MAH compatibilizer in the compound.

Is a compatibilizer the same as a toughening agent?

No. A compatibilizer improves adhesion between phases; a toughening agent raises impact strength. Some grafted polymers do both, for example MAH-grafted LLDPE in PA. Read compatibilizer vs toughening agent or see our toughening agents.

How do I choose a compatibilizer and get samples?

Tell us your matrix resin, the filler, fiber or second polymer and its loading, your property targets and your processing conditions. As a compatibilizer supplier, we will recommend an SY grade and starting dosage, email the TDS and arrange samples. Contact our team or write to info@sychemtech.com.
