High-Performance Styrenic Block Copolymers for Compounding, Adhesives & Modification

SBS: Styrene Butadiene Styrene (Non-Oil-Extended)

SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) is a high-performance thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) known for its excellent balance of rubber-like elasticity and plastic-like processability. Non-oil-extended SBS grades offer higher pure polymer content, providing superior strength and faster processing for specific formulations.

LCY Globalprene SBS grades at a glance

LCY Chemical’s non-oil-extended SBS is sold under the Globalprene® brand. The 17 grades in the table above fall into two structures. Five are radial: 3411, 3411C, 3411P, 3412 and 3741. Twelve are linear, with styrene content from 23% to 45%. The BD/SM column gives the butadiene-to-styrene ratio, so the second number is the styrene content.

How to choose an LCY SBS grade

  • Structure: radial SBS builds a stronger polymer network and higher melt strength, which is why it is widely used in paving bitumen and modified-bitumen roofing. Linear SBS has lower viscosity, dissolves faster and is easier to compound.
  • Styrene content: more styrene gives a harder compound with higher tensile strength and modulus; more butadiene gives a softer, more elastic one with better low-temperature flexibility.
  • Physical form: pellets suit compounding and extrusion. Powder or crumb dissolves faster in solvent-based adhesives and disperses faster in bitumen. Powder is listed for 3411P, 3537, 3710 and 3741, and crumb for 3411P.
  • Protect the mid-block: SBS is unsaturated, so add a phenolic antioxidant plus a phosphite, and avoid long residence above about 200 °C.

LCY SBS FAQ

Which LCY SBS grades are used for asphalt modification?

The radial grades 3411, 3411C, 3411P and 3412 are the classic choice for paving and roofing bitumen. LCY also lists several linear grades for asphalt modification, including 3501, 3520, 3546 and 3710, and 3537 for asphalt binders, joint sealants and peel-and-stick roofing. Tell us your bitumen grade and target specification and we will suggest a starting grade to trial.

Do I need SBS, SBS-OE or SEBS?

Choose dry SBS when you want to set your own oil level or need maximum strength. Choose oil-extended SBS-OE for soft TPR shoe soles and faster mixing. Choose hydrogenated LCY SEBS for outdoor, heat-aged or low-odour parts. The SEBS vs SBS selection guide explains the trade-offs.

What documents come with each order?

Every shipment comes with a TDS and COA; an SDS is available on request, and for applicable grades we can provide the producer’s REACH and RoHS declarations. Samples are available for qualification trials.
