SBS-OE Oil-Extended SBS Supplier
High-Performance Styrenic Block Copolymers for Compounding, Adhesives & ModificationSBS-OE: Styrene Butadiene Styrene (Oil-Extended) Polymer
SBS-OE (Oil-Extended Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) is a specialized thermoplastic elastomer pre-blended with high-quality paraffinic or naphthenic oils during the manufacturing process. This “oil-extension” significantly enhances the material’s processability and softness.

What is SBS-OE oil-extended SBS?
SBS-OE is styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) block copolymer that is blended with paraffinic or naphthenic process oil during manufacturing, before it is pelletized. Because the oil arrives already absorbed in the polymer, compounders skip a mixing step, avoid handling free oil and get a softer, more consistent starting point for TPR compounds. SBS-OE behaves like conventional SBS: rubbery at room temperature and thermoplastic in the melt, so parts can be injection moulded and scrap can be reground.
How to read the SBS-OE grade table
- Structure. Radial grades (1475, 1485, 1487) carry more molecular weight per chain, which gives higher melt strength and green strength. Linear grades (1502, 1546) have lower melt viscosity and flow more easily.
- Extended oil. The oil level ranges from 25% (1546) to 33.3% (1475). More oil means a softer, lower-cost base; less oil leaves more room for your own oil and fillers.
- BD/SM ratio. This is the butadiene-to-styrene ratio of the base polymer. More styrene, as in 1487 at 45/55, gives a harder compound with higher tensile strength. More butadiene, as in 1485 at 68/32 or 1502 at 70/30, gives a softer, more elastic one.
Suggested starting points (confirm with a trial, since hardness also depends on your oil, polystyrene and filler levels):
| Target | Starting grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Softest TPR compounds, slippers | 1502 or 1485 | High butadiene share (70/30, 68/32) and over 30% oil |
| Balanced general-purpose soles | 1475 | Radial structure, 60/40 ratio, 33.3% oil |
| Higher hardness and tensile strength | 1487 | Styrene-rich 45/55 ratio |
| Room for your own oil and fillers | 1546 | Lowest oil level (25%) with a 60/40 ratio |
Where SBS-OE is used
- TPR shoe soles, slippers and sandals, where SBS-OE gives grip, rebound and fast mixing.
- Soft-touch grips, toys, stationery and household goods made for indoor use.
- General soft compounds for mats, pads and seals that are not exposed to sunlight.
Processing and storage tips
- Compound in an internal mixer or twin-screw extruder; SBS compounds typically run at about 150–190 °C. Avoid long residence above 200 °C, which degrades the polybutadiene mid-block.
- Protect the unsaturated mid-block with a phenolic antioxidant plus a phosphite. For parts that see light, add HALS or move to a hydrogenated SEBS grade.
- Store bags in a cool, dry place; oil-extended pellets can stick together in a hot warehouse.
SBS-OE FAQ
What is the difference between SBS-OE and dry SBS plus oil?
Chemically very little: both end up as SBS plus oil. SBS-OE arrives with the oil already evenly absorbed, so mixing is faster and batch-to-batch hardness is more consistent. Dry SBS gives you more freedom to choose your own oil type and level.
Can SBS-OE be used outdoors?
Only with care. Like all SBS it has an unsaturated mid-block that ages under UV light and ozone. For outdoor or long-life parts, SEBS is the safer choice; our SEBS vs SBS selection guide compares the two.
Do you supply samples and data sheets?
Yes. Every shipment comes with a TDS and COA, and samples are available for qualification trials. Tell us your target hardness, process and application, and we will suggest a starting grade.
