Flame Retardant Supplier
Halogen-Free Flame Retardants for the Next Generation of Polymer Compounds
The global polymer industry is moving away from halogen / antimony flame retardant systems faster than at any point in its history. Tightening regulations, end-customer environmental commitments, and the rise of EV battery, LSZH cable, and engineering thermoplastic markets have made halogen-free a non-negotiable requirement. As a flame retardant supplier, Sychem supplies two complementary halogen-free flame retardant families — phosphorus-nitrogen synergistic systems and high-purity synthetic magnesium hydroxide — covering virtually every modern halogen-free formulation challenge.
Why the Halogen-Free Transition Is Accelerating
Four converging forces are reshaping flame retardant procurement decisions across every major polymer-consuming industry
Compliance Pressure
RoHS, REACH, EU Green Deal, China RoHS, and CPSIA continue to expand restrictions on brominated and chlorinated flame retardants — making halogen-free the only safe long-term specification choice.
Thermal-Runaway Defense
EV battery pack covers, busbar insulation, and module housings now require halogen-free V-0 with proven smoke suppression — driving rapid growth in P-N intumescent and high-purity MDH demand.
Building & Transit Codes
EN 50575 CPR, IEC 60332, EN 45545 transit, and NFPA 130 require Low-Smoke Zero-Halogen jacket and insulation — a market historically dominated by MDH-loaded EVA / polyolefin compounds.
Lower Smoke Toxicity
Halogen combustion produces corrosive HBr and HCl gases that damage equipment and threaten human survival in fire scenarios. Halogen-free systems eliminate this risk at source.
How Halogen-Free Flame Retardants Work
Combustion requires three things — fuel, heat, and oxygen. Halogen-free flame retardants disrupt the fire triangle through physical, not toxic, mechanisms.
Endothermic Cooling
MDH absorbs heat through endothermic decomposition (Mg(OH)₂ → MgO + H₂O), absorbing roughly 1300 kJ/kg. The released water vapor cools the flame front and dilutes combustible gases.
Intumescent Char
P-N synergistic systems form a thick, swollen carbonaceous foam on the polymer surface. This char physically separates fuel from flame and oxygen — the basis of all UL94 V-0 polyolefin compounds.
P-N + MDH Combined
Co-loading phosphorus systems with magnesium hydroxide unlocks both mechanisms simultaneously — yielding lower total loading, better mechanical retention, and superior smoke suppression than either chemistry alone.
